Jamaine Johnson faces multiple charges following the alleged attack on Tuesday morning, April 30, the Rhode Island State Police said.
Johnson is accused of choking his girlfriend during an argument at her Peabody home before he took her car and their child around 2:30 a.m., officers said. He reportedly told her he would harm himself and the baby if she called the police.
Troopers found the car on Melissa Street in Providence, Rhode Island. Johnson ran away when they tried to arrest him, but police eventually caught up to him. A brief struggle followed, and he assaulted a trooper during the scuffle, authorities said.
The infant was taken to a Rhode Island hospital for evaluation.
Johnson is charged with assaulting a police officer, domestic assault and battery, strangulation, kidnapping, threats to commit murder, theft of a motor vehicle, and resisting arrest, police said.
